Looks Like...

...a cowgirl who has spent too much time in the tanning booth.

It's that glamorous and elegant time of year where I have to collect all of my pee for 24 hours into a plastic jug, and then try to discreetly transport it in a tote bag to the hospital lab while hoping no one notices the slooshing sound as I briskly walk the hallways.

Man oh man, the adventures those people without diabetes miss out on.

C'mon, kidneys! Don't let me down now!

  1. Pee jug time is the most awkward time to have diabetes, at least I always think so. Plus you can't really go anywhere on Pee Day unless you know you can hold it in between destinations.

  2. I had to do my first 24-hour urine collection during college. I took the pee jug with me to a frat party. AWWW YEAH

  3. I've never had to do a 24 hour urine test. What makes the doctor order it for you? Is it because you're pregnant? Is it because something in standard blood work needed further investigation? My sister with kidney disease has to do it so I know what it is but I've never had to yet in 4 years of Type 1. So help me out. Enquiring minds want to know.

    1. Heidi - it's how they determine your kidney function. I would guess you won't have to do one anytime soon, so no worries - it's generally for those who have had T1 for a while. :)

  4. Mine have never given me the cowboy hat. I've just had to throw away plastic cups - because really no dishwasher could get that clean enough for me!

  5. The only time I've ever had to do a 24 hr collection was during pregnancy. Oh how I loathed the cowboy hat that I pissed in countless times. Happy trails!

  6. Oh wow...thanks for explaining. I had no idea why you would have to do this either... I learn so much with your blog! Thanks! Congrats on the baby too girlie!

  7. Kim, Can I ask what doctor ordered it for you? I am 17 weeks pregnant with T1. My OB told me I would need to do one too but never said anything else about it...So I'm wondering if my endo needs to do it or the maternal fetal doc. There are waaaaaay too many doctors involved in this pregnancy!!!!

    1. Hi! It was my endo, as we were pretty sure it had been a year, anyway, since the last time I'd done one. I'd ask your endo.

      And congratulations!!!

    2. Congratulations!!! I am also a pregnant T1 (with twins due in a few weeks!) and my endo orders these once a year(ish). He had me do one soon before I got pregnant, because we'd spent a year preparing for the pregnancy (lowering A1C, etc.) and needed to make sure my kidneys were doing ok before taking on the strain. All clear! ;) Good luck and again, congratulations!

    3. Thanks ladies! Shannon, I've been reading your blog too, about T1 with a twin pregnancy. I'm trying to find all the blogs that I can because the doctors aren't always the most helpful (except my endo - he rocks!)

Keep up the good blogging work, ladies!!! It's nice to know that I'm not the only T1 pregnant lady out there :)

  8. I had to do this at the beginning of my pregnancy. The thing I really don't get is why they can't have something a little more discreet than a gigantic BRIGHT ORANGE receptacle for your pee. I had to park kind of far away and was walking for what seemed like forever through hallways and people to get to the lab.

  9. Weird. I've had T1 20+ years, seen 5 different endos in that time, and never been asked to do a 24 hour pee collection!

  10. Ugh I hate carrying around the infamous jug! It's not as bad carrying it out of the clinic, as it is carrying it back in - because you (and anyone around you) knows what's in it! Ewww... lol Last time the clinic I went to gave me a brown paper bag to carry it in. So it looked like I was either carrying my big jug 'o pee, or a very large liquor bottle. ;)

  11. I had to carry it to the lab...via the subway during rush hour. I have never cringed so hard on the inside.
